Reports on Kozol??

So.... I saw many of you at the Kozol talk on Thursday.

What did you think? I am so curious to hear what resonated with you, what disappointed you, what you agreed with, what you learned.

Comments, anyone??

  1. Kozol is my new hero... this man is what little kids in the hood call "real". He doesnt hold his tongue for know one. From the moment he got on the stage and said the only reason he was there was becasue of amanda and her friend sorry i forgot her name. forgive me. He was striaght forward with everything, it was something i could relate too from now to my childhood. My neck was stiff for nodding my head yes everything he was saying. I was like were has this guy been my whole life. i have been watchin videos all weekend. The story that stuck with me the most was the one with the tall girl that walked up to him and said thank you because of a new book. It meant more than jus something new, it was a sign of "HOPE" for that girl. growing up we learn that its the material things that count, that quantity is better than quality. I grew up with nothing but ill be damned if my kids do. excuse my language like kozol said. sorry for the long post read

  2. Thanks Professor Bogad,

This has been a life changing experience both in class and outside of class. I have been at RIC for three years and I have never felt this understood and respected. It's like you said in class it feels so much better to know that someone has your back. (Standing Ovation)

  3. Wow!
Just like Miguel, I was touched by the story Kozol told about the girl who said thank you! It is moments like those that drive a person to make a difference. It might not sound very realistic, but its things like this that really make me want to teach.
Also, I thought that Kozol looked much younger than he actually is. I cannot believe that that man is 73! I was AMAZED that he actually knew Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
I am so glad that I went to hear him speak!

  4. I totally agree with Jess and Miguel...he was AMAZING. It blows my mind that he has done so much for what he believes in. I have been telling everyone about him..I even made my mom cry. As I left the auditorium I was at a loss for words..he totally made me think about the kind of teacher I want to be; how all teachers should be. The story that stuck out the most for me was the teacher that visited the boy who misbehaved the most in her class. The things that he and other teachers that he spoke of do go far beyond the expectations of teachers. He is such a strong person; he knows what he believes and he has spent his life fighting for it. I wish more people could have heard him speak. When I told my parents about Kozol they asked me why he isn't more famous; why everyone hasn't had the opportunity to hear him speak. I still wonder why. The things that he had to say should be heard by everyone, ESPECIALLY teachers. I wish I had the courage that he has!
